Ocean Dynamics are Key to Extratropical Forcing of El Niño

چکیده

Abstract El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has been recently linked with extratropical Pacific Ocean atmospheric variability. The two key mechanisms connecting the variability of ENSO are heat flux–driven “seasonal footprinting mechanism” (SFM) and ocean dynamics–driven “trade wind charging” (TWC) mechanism. However, their relative contributions to still unknown. Here we present modeling evidence that positive phase SFM generates a weaker, short-lived central Niño–like warming pattern in autumn, whereas TWC leads wintertime eastern warming. When both active, strong, persistent Niño develops. While can trigger equatorial anomalies generate an Niño, strength persistence depends on subsurface content buildup by These results suggest while dynamical coupling associated forcing is crucial maintain thermodynamical source diversity.

Extratropical Forcing Triggered the 2015 Madden–Julian Oscillation–El Niño Event

In this paper, we report the triggering effect of extratropical perturbation on the onset of an atypical Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and onset of the 2015-16 El Niño in March 2015. The MJO exhibited several unique characteristics: the effect of extratropical forcing, atypical genesis location and timing in the equatorial western Pacific, and the extremity of amplitudes in many aspects. The ...

Cholera dynamics and El Niño-Southern Oscillation.

Analysis of a monthly 18-year cholera time series from Bangladesh shows that the temporal variability of cholera exhibits an interannual component at the dominant frequency of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Results from nonlinear time series analysis support a role for both ENSO and previous disease levels in the dynamics of cholera. Cholera patterns are linked to the previously described...

A Differential Effect of Indian Ocean Dipole and El Niño on Cholera Dynamics in Bangladesh

BACKGROUND A stationary (i.e., constant through time) association between El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and epidemics of cholera in Bangladesh has been widely assumed. However, whether or not elements of the local climate that are relevant for cholera transmission have stationary signatures of the IOD on their dynamics over different time scales is still not...

Extreme oceanographic forcing and coastal response due to the 2015–2016 El Niño

The El Niño-Southern Oscillation is the dominant mode of interannual climate variability across the Pacific Ocean basin, with influence on the global climate. The two end members of the cycle, El Niño and La Niña, force anomalous oceanographic conditions and coastal response along the Pacific margin, exposing many heavily populated regions to increased coastal flooding and erosion hazards. Howe...
